Madeira set up a Contemporary Art Museum in 1992. It was located in Funchal in the São Tiago Fort until 2014, before being relocated. The architect Paulo David designed the Mudas.Contemporary Art Museum. His design work received various awards pointing out the successful and tasteful integration of the building in the Calheta landscape. The Mudas.Contemporary Art Museum has hosted many temporary exhibitions over the past years. On top of its exhibition room, the museum also has an auditorium, workshop studios, a cafe and a library. The museum’s surface totals approximately 12,000m2, and is combined with the already existing Calheta Culture House. Furthermore, in the museum, you will find about 400 art pieces dating between the 1960s and the present day. The collection comprises art pieces by various important Portuguese artists, both from Madeira and the mainland.
